Over the past 40 years, as both a front-line leader and behind-the-scenes strategist, Jonathan has led national and international campaigns to advance the well-being of workers in a wide array of economic sectors. As a 3CG Affiliate Partner, he continues this work by advising leaders, writing, and speaking on labor equity, economic transformation, and long-view strategy. He has envisioned and built multi-pronged strategic campaigns at the 50,000-foot level, but he also deploys extensive administrative and organizational experience to ensure his teams grapple with the nitty-gritty work needed to turn plans into concrete winnable actions.
Jonathan has collaborated with, as an elected leader or senior consultant, a vast cross-section of varied key labor players, such as the Service Employees International Union; United Auto Workers; Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA; Teamsters; United Food & Commercial Workers; United Mine Workers; Communications Workers of America; AFSCME; Maritime Union of Australia; the German DGB (the country’s largest trade union confederation); International Trade Union Confederation; International Labor Organization (ILO); International Federation of Journalists; UNIFOR (Canada) and many more.
His ability to see ahead of the curve has reshaped fundamental tenets of labor relations. During his 13-year tenure as president of the National Writers Union, he saw the evolution of the digital world, and the challenges it posed for creators, long before the advent of a developed Internet. In 1993, after overseeing a two-year internal legal and industry probe, he led a lawsuit (Tasini v. The New York Times) against large media owners, which resulted in a 2001 landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision. That victory shaped significant terrain for creators’ intellectual property rights and compensation in the U.S. and around the globe.
Jonathan is also a respected political thought leader. In 2015–2016, he served as a national surrogate for the presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders, traveling extensively throughout the nation to speak about economic and social policy, as well as regularly bringing those ideas to audiences in appearances on national television and other media. He has twice served as a Democratic Party national convention delegate.
In his current role as the founder and president of the Economic Future Group, he is using several decades of engagement and analysis of economic transitions to advise leaders and advocates in varied countries who are grappling with the challenge of global Just Transition for the millions of workers whose jobs will be reshaped due to climate change. He is currently completing an in-depth analysis for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation of Germany’s landmark Just Transition Coal Commission as a stepping stone to fashion an international template to safeguard the livelihoods and economic security for future generations of workers and their communities.
Jonathan is based in Portland, OR where, when he has a break from his extensive 3CG commitments and other clients, he cycles, roots from afar for his New York Yankees, and tends to a massive food-growing operation in his backyard.
